Long Nineteenth-Century Network
We study the literature, culture, art, architecture, and fashion of the long nineteenth century (1780-1914) and its continuing relevance today.

Welcome to our interdisciplinary research network
Our research brings together academics, students and curators specialising in history, literature and the arts. Our researchers’ expertise spans from the early Romantic period to the onset of the First World War. Active in the English Department since 2014, we organise public events, exhibitions, themed museum tours and reading groups.
We work closely with the Special Collections Museum, the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies, the Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage, and the Manchester Fashion Institute.
As a Northern city of contrasts, Manchester is the ideal place to investigate the nineteenth century, its environments and its heritage. Exploring the diverse heritage of one of the UK’s first industrial cities and its surrounding region, the network is committed to uncovering the manifold histories and legacies of a global city with numerous stories to tell.
